Contextual accuracy: On queries requiring organizational context, what's the accuracy rate?

Correction frequency: How often do users need to correct AI outputs due to contextual misunderstanding?

These metrics reveal whether AI can actually interpret your data—not just access it.

Building Understanding

Creating understanding requires deliberate effort:

Knowledge extraction: Working with domain experts to capture what they know about entities, relationships, and business rules

Entity mapping: Resolving the many ways things are named across systems to canonical identities

Relationship documentation: Explicitly capturing connections that exist implicitly in transaction patterns

Context encoding: Translating organizational knowledge into structures AI can use

This is different from data integration. Data integration creates unified access. Knowledge engineering creates unified understanding.

The business case for understanding over access:

  3. Capture relationships: What relationships matter? Who owns each customer? What products serve each market?

  4. Encode business rules: What organizational logic governs interpretation? What does "approved" mean? What makes something "strategic"?

  5. Build feedback loops: When users correct AI outputs, capture those corrections to improve understanding over time

This creates the foundation that makes AI accurate on internal queries.

The Strategic Implication

The distinction between access and understanding is the strategic battleground for enterprise AI.

Companies that build understanding infrastructure will deploy AI that actually works—that can answer questions accurately, that users trust, that improves decision-making.

Companies that stop at access will deploy AI that occasionally impresses but frequently disappoints—that users learn to distrust, that produces outputs that sound right but aren't.

The access infrastructure is commoditizing. The understanding infrastructure is where competitive advantage lives.
